I was ready for something completely different so I headed for Austin during the SXSW festival. At the same time my other longing was to bring my dog on a vacation trip instead of leaving him behind. I successfully accomplished both simultaneously and rate it as one of the best vacations ever. I live in Virginia so it's about 24 hours of driving in all. I think we saw about 50 or more Cracker Barrel restaurants on our route. It came in handy on the drive home. You can rent a book on tape and drop it off for a refund at another location. Sweet! The weather was terrific, the atmosphere of Austin was all and more than I imagined and the music was all over the place. We really only sampled a small taste of what was available that week. I have all the videos on my Youtube channel and they are marked SXSW in the title. One of our favorite surprises was the chance to see Roky Erickson of the 13th floor Elevators band from the sixties. (I appologize for the poor quality of the videos. I was short and could not see the screen on my camera.If I could do it over again it would be much better) Another treat was seeing Jessica Lea Mayfield at Waterloo Records. ( My exuse for her video is I had my dog on a leash while videoing and could not move up front and had to watch him because we were surrounded by people) I did not plan this trip in advance at all so we did not have wrist band or badge. There was still an excess of music that could be enjoyed without the official SXSW wristband/badge that we hardly knew we were missing out on anything. Here are some pictures of my week. I cant wait to go back again and again. Next time we will fly and get a wrist band for more access.

First Fridays Art Walk

I went to First Fridays Art walk yesterday. The weather was perfect for walking the streets and checking out the galleries. I took a poor quality video of Henry st. Gallery where I was looking to see the art of Georgia Meyers. Her paintings are the group of portraits in the video. She is going to make a copy of one of the portraits for me. I didnt get to enjoy all of the galleries because I chose to wear shoes that were cute to look at but very uncomfortable to walk in. I can't wait to go next month in the most comfortable clothes and shoes I can find. The music is by Boat Burning. I appologize for the shaking and poor quality. Our kodak camera has a better quality video and I will be using that from now on. Going to the galleries really inspires me to get busy creating things.

3 year old art

I am lucky enough to have some drawings I did when I was about 3 years old. I estimate the age from dates on the forms I was drawing on. My plan is to make a quilt with them as I did
here. I have lots of fabric scraps but I would like to dye my own fabric. Maybe I'll do some of each. I have made sketches of the general layout and next will make color sketches to get my colors figured out. And then I guess I'll experiment with dying some fabric. I will post updates as I go along.

Getting into the Christmas spirit.
Let me count my blessings with you. I had a surprise sale last night. Every sale is a surprise especially right before Christmas. I went to the post office this morning and was in and out in five minutes. I did'nt know you could do priority and delivery confirmation on the self service machine! The forcast calls for snow tonight and into tomorrow. How delightful! I hope all of you are finding peace, joy and love during this holiday season! Merry Christmas! ( the video is my Christmas tree)

Here is Teddy with his little felted miny likeness. We are delighted to have this adorable felted dog in our home. Teddy was very cooperative and did not try to eat or destroy his little friend. Of course he is kept out of reach when not being photographed. Big thanks again to Ben McFuzzy lugs for making and sending our tiny Teddy. Lakeside Retail Merchants’ Holly Jolly Open House event Nov. 13th-14th

Attention Richmond Va. residents and those of you in the surrounding areas, I am happy to say I will be participating in the Lakeside retail merchants' Holly Jolly Open House. This will take place November 13th and 14th (Friday and Saturday) Friday offers trolly rides to select hot spots for great shopping. (the ad above is last year's so the dates are not correct for this year) Lakeside Avenue is probably less than 2 miles long but offers a great variety of unique shops and businesses. Thanks to Virginia Craft-n-istas a group of artists and crafters will be set up at the Lakeside Town Center 6114 Lakeside Ave. which is front and center of that great indoor outdoor mini shopping complex. Friday will take place 5pm to 9pm and Saturday will run from 10am to 3pm. I will only be there Saturday unfortunately.
I hope you can drop by and support local businesses and artists. Tell your friends or bring them with you.

I received my new business cards from Overnight Prints. 500 for $9.91. That's free except for the shipping charge. I think they look great.
We went to the 43rd Street Festival of the Arts And as ususal, plenty of great artist. I bought some great note cards from Steve Hedbert. The box of cards are prints of his painting of scenes around Richmond.
Jewelry by Bijou Graphique is wonderful. I've seen the art of Foust many times at many shows and I love it! And how about some amazing beadwork by Ingrid Bernhardt.
After the art show we made stop into Mongrel, a wonderful card and gift store. I picked up some cards and a reusable totebag by Envirosax. If you look at the link you will see which bag I picked. You can see all of the designs they offer also.
And last but not least a visit to Ellwood Thompsons organic market. I snapped a picture on the way in because I love the mural on the outside. Painting by Ed Trask. I'm feeling so gratful to be living here. How was your day?

I'll use this as my comment entry. Before I adopted Teddy from the Henrico Humane Society I has some cosmic gravitational pull to find a dog. I was at the SPCA one day and saw a funny little white dog with huge ears but fairly small in size. The lable on the kennel was "cattle dog". I did not know what that was but that was all I wanted from that point on. I searched the on line pet adoption sites and saw Teddy. I went to the location they set up for the adoptions had to wait for him to arrive. There was as similar dog that was smaller and very cute already there. Once Teddy arrived I spend a long while just hanging around with him. I thought about the other dog but I had come for Teddy and I brought him home that day. Teddy makes us laugh every day and fills my life with many challenges. I'll never tire of his cuteness. Here's two pictures of him. The pumkin hat picture is my favorite and the pin cushion picture shows him into mischief.
PS I found the original photo from the web site adoption. It's the very top photo. What a cutie pie he was!

I saw Deborah G Rogers at the Va. Beach Boardwalk Art Show last week. I see her every now and then at these large shows.I wish you could see more of her work. I am always thrilled to see what she has done. Her work is so special. She is a self proclaimed "narrative sculptor". I only have one picture to show you of her work which I pulled from her business card. I could find nothing about her on the internet. She told me she was working on a website for later this year. I am looking forward to that. She has put in an application to the Craft and design Show and said if you don't see me there, they did not accept me. I told her they have scaled down the size but she belongs in that show and dont see why she would not be accepted.

I took these pictures at the Federated Warehouse which I just found out is no more. It was kind of a salvage store flea market with furniture, signs, very large scale items. This rooster caught my eye. I dont know how tall it was but much too large for me. I was sad to see the place closed down. It was a fun place to brouse. If you like something, you better take a picture of it before it is gone.

Are you making an effort to recyle, reduce and reuse? I just received Bio Bag doggie poop bags in the mail. They are made from plants instead of petroleum and will compost in 45 days as opposed to 100 years. I believe these are sold at Whole Foods. I will have to do a cost comparison. I estimated this came to about .08 a bag. Go visit shop green duck .com and see a variety of bags as well as cups for cold and hot drinks, plates and cutlery. All are biodegradable so you would be doing the planet a great favor.

Diet talk

Anyone on a diet? I just tryed the Sacred Heart Medical Diet. I have tried to avoid a real diet for forever. I sucessfully completed the week of dieting and lost 4 lbs. I am very pleased with these results. I did not do any extra exersize either. Just my ususal dog walking. The diet promised 10- 17 lbs, but I knew that was just not going to happen for me. I have managed to not drink Diet Coke for 2 weeks also. I feel I can keep that craving at bay for now. I can't tell you how much I craved Diet Coke for so many years. I feel I have reset my eating habits. I am eating so much fruit. Happy Spring into Summer!!! Bon Appetit!!!

This is my first give away!!! I am trying to build my Face Book Fan list. I will run this for about 3 weeks so that I can reach enough people. I have a really cute pink shirt to offer up as the give away. This is an Anvil XL cotton shirt that measures 19 1/2 wide by 22 1/2 from top of neck to bottom. This is kind of an in between shirt. not clingy or boxy and oversized. Let me know if you have questions. The butterfly was done with batik. It is really in reverse. I apply the wax in all of the areas that are not the butterfly leaving a boarder and paint the dye on the butterfly.I let it dry completely and boil the wax out. Then I dyed the pink all over. OK the cut off date will be June 24th!!

Sustainability for the masses

I saw the documentary "Garbage Warrior" and was so enlightened. I would ask all of you to seek out that video. I believe I saw it on Sundance channel. Living green and even more important sustainably does not have to be only for the very rich. If you learn from Michael Reynolds almost anyone can build a home that works with nature to supply all of your basic needs that the planet offers for free and you will not be harming the enviroment in the process. Please have a look at the web site for a great deal of information. I like the idea of growing plants and vegetables inside your home, the thermal mass walls that collect heat and radiate it back to maintain a comfortable climate, and the walls that use bottles as bricks and make a beautful mosaic look. Imagine building your home with garbage that would normally go to a land fill and end up with the home of your dreams. Please do have a look and tell all of your friends. We must fight the status quo. Things are dire and are surely getting worse with our planet's resourses and global warming. We do need to find a better way to live in this world and as far as I am concerned this is it!

I wanted to come up with a small give away item that I could put in orders and give out as promotional gifts. Here are some bookmarks I made using batik. I did not finish the edges. I embroidered the hole to finish that part off. I had a rubber stamp made with my Etsy site name and stamped that on both sides. This also satifies my pink and orange obsession. If you were to order one of my shirts, this would be added to the package.

Hi, I'm using the form letter supplied on an etsy thread.

As parents and concerned citizens I’m sure most of us at one time or another have been confronted with the question of lead poisoning. But have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They're banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we've seen in decades. I'd like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.

Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it.

The CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real. View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too.

How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:

To the Parents of Young Students:
Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. While those paper clips weren't originally intended for your student to use, they will need to be tested now that your 11-year-old needs them for his school project. This law applies to any and all school supplies (textbooks, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) being used by children under 12.

To the Avid Reader:
Due to the new law, all children's books will be pulled from library and school shelves, as there is no exemption for them. That’s okay though, there's always television. Our children don’t need to learn the love of reading after all.

To the Lover of All Things Handmade:
Due to the new law, you will now be given a cotton ball and an instruction manual so you can make it yourself since that blanket you originally had your eye on for $50 will now cost you around $1,000 after it's passed testing. It won't even be the one-of-a-kind blanket you were hoping for. Items are destroyed in the testing process making one-of-a-kind items virtually impossible. So that gorgeous hand-knit hat you bought your child this past winter won’t be available next winter.

To the Environmentalist:
Due to the new law, all items in non-compliance will now be dumped into our already overflowing landfills. Imagine not just products from the small business owners, but the Big Box Stores as well. You can't sell it so you must toss it. Or be potentially sued for selling it. You can't even give them away. If you are caught, it is still a violation.

To the Second-Hand Shopper:
Due to the new law, you will now need to spend $20 for that brand new pair of jeans for your 2-year old, rather than shop at the Goodwill for second hand. Many resale shops are eliminating children's items all together to avoid future lawsuits.

To the Entrepreneur:
Due to this new law, you will be forced to adhere to strict testing of your unique products or discontinue to make and/or sell them. Small businesses will be likely to be unable to afford the cost of testing and be forced to close up shop. Due to the current economic state, you'll have to hope for the best when it comes to finding a new job in Corporate America.

To the Antique Toy Collector:
Due to the new law, you'd better start buying now because it's all going to private collection and will no longer be available to purchase. “Because the new rules apply retroactively, toys and clothes already on the shelf will have to be thrown out if they aren't certified as safe.”
To the American Economy:
Already struggling under an economy that hasn’t been this weak in decades, the American economy will be hit harder with the inevitable loss of jobs and revenues from suppliers, small businesses and consumers. The required testing is far too costly and restrictive for small businesses or individuals to undertake.

To the Worldwide Economy:
Due to this new law, many foreign manufacturers have already pulled out of the US market. You can imagine the impact of this on their businesses.

"Save Handmade" Quilt

I hope everyone is familiar with the CPSIA (Comsumer Product Safety Improvement Act).
It was discussed in an Etsy thread today. I dont think there is enough coverage or concern about this in the media. I really dont know why, this is a very serious issue that affect many people. Even if you dont make toys or children's clothes, I think you will find that it will affect your life all the same. I think everyone on Etsy should do something to speak out by contacting congress or the like. Please read the thread and join us if you like in making a quilt. I'm not really a quilter but I have successfully completed one quilt. you can see it in the archives of this blog. I think I can manage one 10 x 10 block. What I would like to see with this quilt is flickr exposure, Utube video and major media contact. Oprah, Martha Stewart, Ellen etc..If you have something unusual like a huge quilt and large group of zealous artists and crafters it should be topical enough to gain interest in some media venue. Also join in on Wednesday for a blog event seen here. OK I just sent a little note to Oprah . Why don't you do the same?

What else can I do to be seen? I'm just trying to keep my head above water in what feels like a cyber tsunami. Myspace, facebook, project wonderful, twitter, google base, google analytic, blogs, websites, flickr and so on.
So I was reading an article in Entrepreneur in the technology section from January 2008. The trend is the small handheld devices that allow internet access. Why not be easily found on the gadgets of the cutting edge crowd. In addition to your .com go get a .mobi. Once you get your new mobi domain name be sure to format your site with only up and down scrolling and no left to right. This will make your site more user friendly to the mobile device internet users. Everytime you turn around, something you've just figured out becomes obsolete. Resources include pc.mtld.mobi and networksolutions.com. What a great coup to connect with more people in a new unique way.

Ed Brownlee Ceramics

I briefly spoke to Ed Brownlee at the 2008 Craft and Design Show put on by the Visual Arts Center of Richmond. I asked him for his business card and he said he did not have one but would make one. He wrote down his name and email address on a scrap of paper. I asked him if he had a website and he did not. I told him he must get his work on the internet and he mentioned that people had suggested setting up a blog but he was very put off by the idea thinking it was too much work. I managed to find him in spite of himself at this gallery site. I wish you could see more of his work than is available on this gallery site. I love the playful whimsical quality of his work. Come on Ed, get yourself a blog and share your great work with everyone!

2nd Annual Christmas Open House

Ready or not I'm signed on to join other artists in a neighborhood open house. Just an excuse to encourage shopping. I found out less than a week ago and I always feel I am not prepared or ready. It is forcasted to rain all Saturday but we will be inside fortunately. I went to an art thing ( Art Around Lakeside) to see my friend Dana Frostick. We arrived late when everyone was packing up and I starting looking at the art of Katherine Meiller. Once I see that I like something I try to look at all of it. She showed me a stack of sketches which were wonderful and she then offered me to take one. so here it is. I left with her sketch and her business card and noticed later that she is on Etsy. How nice to run into an Etsy artist by chance. I love her collages and her store @ KatherineMeiller.etsy.com and her website is katherinemeiller.com. I hope you enjoy this sketch as much as I do. They were all wonderful and more of them can be seen under Studies in ink on her website.

We have an XO laptop. Have a look at laptop.org to see what it's all about. You buy one for yourself and one for a child in a developing country. If you're looking for a good deed to do, this is a great opportunity to help a child across the globe that would not otherwise be able to afford a computer. Larger than an Iphone but smaller than the regular laptop. I prefer a regular size keyboard but if you are a textmessanger or use a blackberry I guess it would be no big deal for you. I set up a flickr group of my photos.

I read about an internet scam on Etsy today where several Etsy seller's items were listed for sale without their knowlege or permission. the thread is here. the store is called o-handbag. It takes more and more effort to be internet savy and avoid being victimized by criminals. please read the thread and be alert for this type of activity. A great tool to have is the google alert. Use words unique to you and your shop. That is how this store was discovered.I was just testing the ohandbag link and at this time it no longer works. hmmmmmm Hopefully it is shut down for good. I still had this site up and I printed this and scanned it for evidence.

The meaning of life

Who isn't on a quest for their best life? What is the secret? What is the meaning? Why am I not happy more that I am? I am reading A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle and I believe this will help anyone find a more fulfilling life. I know meditation is a key but I'm not doing that. I am also reading Eat Pray Love and that is a great read. In that book I was relieved to find out it's not that easy to meditate and you should learn from a Yogi. For some reason the message I am getting from A New Earth is easily digested and hopefully easily applied to one's life. The nutshell is check your ego, don't judge, don't attach, and don't resist. Don't attach yourself to any outcome. Don't resist the uncontrolable bad things that happen to you. Go with the flow. When you resist anything, you resist the whole universe. If you cloud you head with negative thoughts and emotions you will miss an opportunity for the better solution. I recommend everyone read this book for everyone's further enlightenment.

Got milk?

What's in Richmond, Va.? Cool old buildings, that's what. I call this the milk bottle building. At the time of this photo it was an art studio of sorts. A raw old building quite unrenovated. Inside I found this great old "milk" colored tom cat. I looked up some tid bits about the building that you can see here. Another view of the building that I dont have is from the other side. This building has been turned into apartments that I have not had the pleasure of seeing. In this link, there are buildings from all over with the milk theme. Who would 'nt want to live in a milk bottle? I love all the old building, factories and things like that. The Kanawha Canal area was renovated and further development is ongoing for restaurtants, housing etc. so everyone can enjoy the historic district.

I received a request for a shirt based on the Kelly green shirt. I work by instinct and not by measuring or keeping track of anything really. So the outcome of the final product does not resemble the original shirt. I actually like the new shirt more than the bright green shirt but was distraught over trying to get very close to copying it. I dont have the patience for measuring and detailed notes so when I finish with a shirt I'm not likely to duplicate it again unless by dumb luck. So there's the dye powder to measure, the soda ash and salt. they all affect the end results. The first shirt I did yellow then fuschia and turquois blue last. On the second shirt fushia then green. I also have a plan B shirt that I continued to work on and have finished today but will need to wash and photograph it when I have some daylight. I'll add it later for comparison. I have broken down and am taking notes so I can master the colors.

I forgot to come back and update this post. the very top photo is my plan B shirt. Once I saw how different my first shirt was I started a second with of course a completely different look than the first two. However, I like the coloring on this one too. I like to call it camo as it reminds me of camoflage.

My furry friends

This picture is Katie who is Pookie. Unfortunitely she passed on 1/3/08 at the age of 15. She was adopted as a tiny kitten from the SPCA. She was talking the loudest in the depressing room of wall to wall cages. I never tired of her talking to us and encouraged her to talk back all the time. She was to be the companion of Spencer. They were about the same age. Spencer was a survivor. He was the only surviving kitten of a litter and was nursed to good health without his mother until he was old enough to adopt. On of the managers at work was asking everyone if they were interested in adopting a kitten that his daughter was taking care of. And I took him home. Cat number 3 is Baby. She is about 11 years now and quite large. My guess right now is about 16 lbs if not a little more. She loves lots of one on one, face to face attention. I had to have her because she look so much like Pookie. A friend from work had kittens that needed homes. Once I went to her house and saw her, I had to have her. Teddy is the newest member from July 2006. He is almost 2 years old now. He is a very easy dog to live with considering all the types and temperments available. We havent done any obedience classes which I would still love to do except for the expense of it. I would also love to do the agility training etc. but I cant imaging the tons of cash that would cost to do that on an on going basis.

This quilt was created from children's art work. I chose the art work, created a layout and sized the images to fit the grid layout. All of the small pieces are hand sewn and outlined with embroidery.

My cats

These three paintings in oil are of cats from the same litter. I had these cats years ago so the paintings are not new. The white cat is Chloe who looked like a siamese with blue eyes. The dark tabby is Winnie and the orange and white tabby is Tater. I kept these cats as long as I could before I had to move and could not keep four cats. I kept their mother "Ralph" as she was partly wild and would be difficult to re-home.

Centerville Pumpkin Festival

On October 20, 2007 I participated in my first art fair at the Centerville Pumpkin Festival. It was a very windy but sunny day. I was not prepared for the wind as my shirts wanted to blow away. That was one of many things I learned about outdoor shows. I only sold 5 shirts but the crowd was tough. Not only small but maybe not the most handmade shopping type of people. I really went for the experience and because I had not done this before. The bottom photo is looking out from my sparce simple tent. See the huge crowd. Mmmmm. The photo above that is of some alpacas. Are'nt they cute. See two photos of the pumpkin batik shirts for sale. The purple shirt at the top is one that I sold. I really love how that turned out. I love the colors.
